Learning to Drive in Alberta

Like many other Albertans, I am not an original. And like many other Albertans, I am unfamiliar with the driver education system in the province because each province has different educational and age requirements. I recently thought that I should familiarize myself with Alberta’s driver rules as my children will soon be behind the wheel of our family vehicle.

After four google searches, I finally found the page outlining Alberta’s new driver regulations. The link to that document is http://www.transportation.alberta.ca/1817.htm

In summary, Alberta drivers have a graduated process for learning that starts at the age of 14. Stage 1 – Learners License is the general overview of road rules, vision tests and parent consent. Your teenager will have to pass a knowledge test (at least 25 out of 30 correct) at this stage to earn a “Learners License” which entitles the driver to drive with an 18 years or older fully licensed driver, not drive from midnight to 5 AM, zero alcohol or drugs, and only passengers for the number of seat belts. These learning drivers must have this license for a minimum of one year and at the completion of this year (but in cases when you start at the age of 14 this is a 2 year license), potentially move into Stage 2 – Graduated Drivers License Probationary. At this stage the driver must be is at least 16 years of age, and pass a road test. Drivers stay in this second stage for a minimum of 2 years. Driver’s here can drive on their own. At which time you can advance to Stage 3 – Full Driver’s License. In this stage, the driver must be suspension free for 2 years and pass the advanced road test. In total, the three stages will take a minimum of 3 years.

Please review the full document in the above link. This is a more complicated process than I am used to, so understanding each stage is crucial. Also ask at your child’s school about the driver education program available.
